Alright, what comes to mind when you think of Drniš? Prosciutto? The Čikola River? Stojko Vranković?
Drniš may not be on Croatia’s top 10 list of famous destinations — but its prosciutto definitely is.
In Drniš, prosciutto isn’t something that’s simply “produced” — it’s raised. Dried by the bora wind and the scent of smoke, with no rush, no chemicals, no shortcuts. And that’s how it’s been for generations.
Čikola? You’ve (of course) heard of it, but you probably have no idea where it is.
Well, it’s right here in Drniš, where it flows from the fields into a fascinating canyon, continuing downstream all the way to its confluence with the Krka River, just before the famous Skradinski Buk waterfall.
Yes, Drniš is only a few kilometers away from Krka National Park, one of Croatia’s and Dalmatia’s true gems.
Stojko Vranković? What about him — and who is he?
For those of us who grew up when Croatian basketball was among the best in the world, this towering center — who played for the legendary KK Zadar, the Boston Celtics, and became a living legend in Greece — is almost the embodiment of Drniš itself: tall, strong, persistent, authentic, humble.
He’s the kind of person you respect, even if he’s playing for the opposing team.
And we can’t forget probably Drniš’s most famous native — Ivan Meštrović.
This brilliant, world-renowned sculptor channeled his love for his homeland into his mausoleum and several other works that can be found in the town itself — a perfect opportunity to see why many consider him the greatest Croatian artist of the 20th century.

Route
Drniš and the Epic Ride in Drniš are something entirely different.
If you haven’t been, you probably have no idea what to expect.
There isn’t much tourism here. No cafés with designer lattes and Wi-Fi passwords like “welcome123.” Somewhere between two bends and three goat trails, you ride as if the day itself can’t slip away, because, in truth, it can’t. You can ride fast or slow, and it all feels the same.
The images that pass by are simple: a dry stone wall, a fig tree, an old woman watering her garden in slippers. The soundtrack - birdsong and the hum of a tractor.
It’s a transition from urban hyper-productivity to the Dalmatian–Zagora pomalo rhythm. First, the worries disappear, then the ego, and finally the urge to always be doing something “useful.” You might reach for your camera - but why?
The locals are curious, grateful that you’re here, and proud that you’re riding through their land.
The Mihaljevićs, Andabakas, Živkovićs, Žarkovićs, Odaks, Ramljaks, Bukaricas, and Topićs, then Biočićs and Miočićs. Here, it seems every family once had its own corner of the map. Sometimes you pass a house from which drifts the smell of something that surely involves olive oil, garlic, and at least one recipe that isn’t written down but simply known.
It’s a landscape not made for postcards, but for memory. It doesn’t dazzle at first glance, it seeps under your skin and stays there. There’s something humble and stubborn about it, something that doesn’t try to be beautiful, and therefore is.
Drniš and its surroundings aren’t an escape. This isn’t an “escape.”
It’s a shift.
